BUILD PAC
WHAT IS BUILD-PAC?
BUILD-PAC is a political action committee (PAC). PACs are organizations dedicated to raising and spending money to either elect or defeat candidates running for political office. Incorporated membership organizations, such as the National Association of Home Builders and the North Carolina Home Builders Association, cannot make direct contributions to a candidate. However, they may set up a PAC to do so.
NAHB BUILD-PAC is the bipartisan political action committee of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). NAHB’s goal is to support and elect pro-housing candidates at the federal level through the voluntary contributions of NAHB members. NAHB BUILD-PAC only engages in federal election activity and these activities are governed by the Federal Election Commission. The NAHB BUILD-PAC is overseen by the Federal Elections Commission and can only contribute to candidates for federal races (i.e. U.S. Senate and U.S. House). Contributions to these different PACs must be made separately since they are different entities.
NCHBA BUILD-PAC is a non-partisan committee organized for the specific purpose of raising funds to support pro-housing candidates of all parties at the state and local levels of government. North Carolina has its own set of campaign finance laws, administered by the North Carolina State Board of Elections, which governs the filing and activities of state PACs. By law, NCHBA BUILD-PAC can only contribute to candidates for office in the state of North Carolina. Examples include: statewide races (i.e., Governor, Commissioner of Labor, et al), races for the General Assembly (i.e. House and Senate) and local races (i.e. County Commissioner, City Council, et al).
WHO RUNS BUILD-PAC?
You do! Each local HBA has a trustee who sits on the NCHBA BUILD-PAC Board of Trustees, which approves contributions given to candidates for statewide office or for the General Assembly.
The NAHB BUILD-PAC has two trustees from North Carolina who make recommendations for contributions to federal candidates who represent North Carolina.
Contributions for local candidates are determined by the leadership of the local HBA. We support viable pro-housing candidates regardless of their political party registration.
DOES MY LOCAL HBA BENEFIT FROM MY CONTRIBUTION?
Thirty percent (30%) of every dollar contributed is put into a fund to be exclusively used by your local HBA. These funds are called “local reserves.” Most local HBAs choose to spend these monies to contribute to candidates for local races, such as county commissioner and/or city council. The remaining seventy percent (70%) of your contribution goes into the general fund of NCHBA BUILD-PAC and is used to contribute to candidates for the General Assembly, statewide offices and other non-federal races.
Contributions to NC BUILD-PAC are an investment in the future of your business and the home building industry as a whole. It is essential that we are able to support the candidates that understand and will fight for the issues important to us when they are in office. Candidates who receive support from NC BUILD-PAC know our critical issues and understand the depth of that support because it comes from thousands of builders and associates across the state. NC BUILD-PAC contributions are the key to our being able to promote a pro-housing agenda in the legislature and local governments statewide..
